‘What will you do with your one wild and precious life?’
Taken from ‘The Summer Day’ by poet Mary Oliver, it’s a question I put to my coaching and therapy clients. It’s a question that’s relevant whether they have achieved all they set out to achieve in life or find themselves in a stagnant career and want to pivot.
At some point, we all wake up and wonder if we are living the life we want.
My first step with any client facing this dilemma is to unpack what it really means to them.
Some believe that if they aren’t running a nonprofit in some remote spot that their life lacks meaning. Sometimes, simply reframing and looking at how many people you employ and provide a lifestyle for, can shift the black and white thinking.
We are often doing much more meaningful work than we realize. And little things become big things.
During Covid, I recall watching the trash trucks doing their job and thinking how awful it would be if they weren’t there to keep our lives clean. The same goes for plumbers, electricians and all skilled tradespeople maintaining the things we take for granted so our busy lives function seamlessly.
Then there was the supply chain…delivering food to grocery stores, the hospitals that cared for the sick and the many business owners who reimagined the workplace, to allow employees to work effectively from home.
Entrepreneurs who provide employment and health insurance are a great thing. And people selling items to brighten the lives of others. Or those who provide entertainment to help us relax and unwind.
All our lives are interconnected; sometimes we just don’t realize the positive effect we have on those around us.
Okay, but what if that isn’t enough? What if you really feel you have no meaning after your company is bought out and you don’t need to work again?
Or what if you really are in a dead-end job where your boss doesn’t appreciate you and you spend all your time at the office?
Then it IS time to dig deeper.
When I meet people, I like to dig in, to really get to know you.
I also help you get to know you.
First, we use a personality test and resources to help to understand you.
Then we plan and we act… we encourage you to get out into the world and experiment with new things to see how – or if – they work for you. And we build on your strengths. We make intelligent changes, aligned with who you really are.
If you’re looking for a relationship, we figure out together where to meet the type of person you would fit well with. Then we work on what a relationship looks like and develop the skills to make that as harmonious as possible.
If you’re starting a new endeavor or considering a project you have been putting off, the key is to start living now. Don’t wait.
Why come in? It speeds up the whole process because we don’t have time to waste!
My life is dedicated to learning everything I can about what makes humans thrive. I love sharing these insights to help people get to living as soon as possible.
What will you do with your one wild and precious life?
